I ADORE the 4-poster bed with the vines going up the posters. In this scene, Kevin is longingly looking at a photo of his family and wishing they had not disappeared. Over the years, I began to wonder–what was so special about the Home Alone house? I decided to watch it again a while back, and I was stunned. The home is beautiful but I was really surprised at how it was decorated. At the time this was released, Chevy Chase, who played the family father Clark Griswold, was 46 years old, while Beverly D'Angelo, who played his wife Ellen, was 38.
Let's jump ahead a couple of decades to find the time when festive films really found their stride, starting with A Christmas Story. Of course, the first thing he decides to do includes eating a ton of junk food and watching a movie that isn’t appropriate for a kid. Indeed, Home Alone is not an action movie at all, and yet, it’s so rich with possibility, despite what the countless sequels and diminishing returns for both Home Alone and Die Hard otherwise suggest. As Die Hard in particular got bigger and louder, fans yearned for its roots as a contained thriller, to see a character pressed into identifying the best decision among bad options. It’s easy for anyone to imagine themselves in those kinds of situations and wonder what they would do.
While I worked in the EXTRA's casting department, I became very good friends with the set decorators I loved watching them pull the most insidental details together. It is interesting that I did not remember any of the details of the decorating of the Home Alone house. My only memory of the house was that it was very elegant and beautifully decorated.
